Our
Story
Te Whaanga translated, means ‘The Lagoon’. It is the only landfall on this particular coastline that is not hemmed in by the bar. For Maori, the ancestral people of New Zealand, Te Whaanga proved to be an ideal settlement. Its sheltered bay provided landing for waka (canoe) and respite when repairs needed to be made to nets, tools and weapons. Its proximity to the open-ocean and local forest, made it a perfect jumping point for both deep sea fishing expeditions, game and food foraging.
By the 18th century, the settled areas around Te Whaanga were occupied by Ngati Koata. It is from those Ngati Koata tupuna (ancestors) that the current owners of this property trace their lineage. The photos of their great, great grandfather, Roma Ruruku (the last Ngati Koata Chief) and his daughter Wetekia, have place of pride at Te Whaanga Retreat. We like to think that as they did in generations past, they still vigilantly watch over the land and its manuhiri (important guests). The whanau (family) have spent decades on this land, camping, enjoying activities such as surfing, swimming, picking lilies, and diving for seafood. They now wish to share these experiences with guests, whether they seek adventure or seclusion.
Hemi Whanau
Our whanau has grown from a family of 2 girls and 5 boys to over 100 people including 33 grandchildren and 36 great grand children scattered across the world. Te Whaanga is a place all of the whanau can gather and call home.
Indicators
Te Whaanga Retreat & Spa is the only property situated directly in front of the famous point break, Indicators. The deck areas overlook the waves providing a short run into the surf. The longest and fastest of the three Raglan point breaks, Indies is a long left-hand wave that breaks onto a boulder beach. Some rate Indicators as the best surf break in the country in terms of size, quality and consistency. Surf Seeker NZ provides a good description of the waves at Indies, which they rate best for advanced to expert surfers only. You can read it here.
